For over four centuries, Hortus botanicus Leiden has collected, cultivated, and studied plants and trees from around the globe. Today, this extensive collection flourishes in a captivating array of beautiful gardens and glasshouses, featuring historical landmarks such as the Orangery and the Observatory. However, with so much to see, it can be difficult not to feel like you are missing hidden views or seasonal highlights. Thoughtfully placed information elements give visitors the opportunity to wander whilst getting reminded of areas they simply should not miss.

Navigation

Intuitive, stress-free, and well integrated in the natural environment but present when you need it – this was our motto for creating guidance through this botanical marvel.
Every journey starts before entering the Hortus, when visitors have to navigate the busy entrance area. This area streamlines visitor flow, guiding people seamlessly between the entrance, the shop, the Hortus Grand Café and the facilities. Once past the ticketing gates, visitors immediately step into the Winter Garden: a garden that features a canopy walk and a fascinating collection of carnivorous plants.

Several parks and green spaces in the historic center of Leiden are connected by the Singelparkroute. Just look out for the colorful birds that look like they’ve just landed on the fingerpointers in the Hortus: they help visitors navigate the Singelparkroute right through the gardens.

Experience

Wayfinding has the ability to align with the unique characteristics of its surroundings and to complement the identity of a place. By resonating natural shapes and colorways, the wayfinding elements in the Hortus harmoniously integrate into the vibrant gardens and lush glasshouses.

With shades of green and touches of pink, the finger pointers draw your attention while also being tailored to the context. Beautiful illustrations in subtle shades of blue invite visitors to search for the fourteen Crown Jewels hidden in the Hortus. Mijksenaar collaborated closely with the amazing Hortus team and with various skilled designers and producers to create a wayfinding system that adapts to the Hortus’ identity and seasonal changes, ensuring every visitor can enjoy an intuitive experience.
