Bespoke soundscapes in train stations could create much more independence while travelling.

Creating a wayfinding soundscape in our #Lab

We have been hard at work in our Mijksenaar Lab, working on a project to create better travelling experiences in train stations.

A year ago, we started with a first, exploratory project, the results of which we  shared in a one-pager. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that we secured a design grant from the Creative Industries Fund NL for a follow-up project. The grant committee praised our proposal for its innovative approach, social significance and potential impact, particularly applauding our commitment to integrating the perspectives of blind and partially sighted individuals into wayfinding design and education.

In this next phase, we’ll dive deeper, developing and testing sound designs to make specific destinations more perceptible and distinguishable. For example, we’ll explore the possibility of unique sounds for chip gates at different exits, aiding travelers in orientation and navigation. Our core team, comprised of sound designers Bas de Bruin, Paul Wienk, and myself, will be joined by esteemed partners and contributors: Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, Koninklijke Visio, Bartimeus, ProRail, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Weekend van de Wetenschap.

We’re excited to continue with our work on this project  to make transportation more accessible for everyone and look forward to sharing our progress with you!
